Newbie has a few questions about the Mac version

Post by Sarahswati » Tue Feb 08, 2011 7:25 pm

I just got the Mac version of SoF yesterday from the Mac App Store, (version 1.9, I think). I love it so far! You've done a great job on it.

I'm a veteran of Angband and similar games, so I think I'm finding my way around pretty well, but there are still a few things that are confusing me about the game that I'd like your help with if I may:

1. I'm playing on a Macbook, using a mouse (Logitech V220, FWIW) and the four arrow keys that are built in to the keyboard. Is there a way to move or attack diagonally in one move, since I don't have a full set of directional keys? (Hmm, this is weird. All of a sudden, I can move with the mouse. I could've sworn I'd tried this before to no avail... and... now it's not working again. *confused*)

2. Is there a keyboard equivalent for the... what do you call it... magic button?... in the upper right corner of the screen, so I don't have to click it with the mouse?

3. Is there a way to drop items?

4. There either seems to be a bug with the menu scroll on the left or there is something I'm not getting. I can only view four items in any of the scroll menus. It looks like there may be an arrow that appears at the bottom of the scroll when more options should be available, but whenever I try to click down there, the scroll disappears.

5. Is there a way to view a monster's remaining/total HP?

6. What are orbs/eyes for? When I try to use one, nothing happens. edit: I see using one is the problem ;) , though I'm still not sure what they're for.

7. Another bug: the Continue "Character" menu overlaps the list over characters/saved games on the main screen.

8. Is there a way to disarm traps?

9. I'm on DL 8 so far. As far as armor and weapons go, I've only found shields and no weapons or other armor of any kind. Is this normal?

10. Sometimes when I'm engaged in battle, I can't get my character to stop attacking. Is this a bug or is there some mode or condition that causes this that I'm not noticing?

Thank you for your help! :)

Hey Sarahswati, let me try to answer some of your questions:

1. If you press both required keys at once, eg. up and left keys at once, the hero will move diagonally. We're probably going to add 8-key movement support in an update though. And yes, you can move with the mouse too.

2. If you press CTRL, ENTER, or SPACE it will trigger the Action in the upper-right corner of the screen.

3. You can drop a shield by selecting it in the menu.

4. Yes, you must click and drag the menu scroll to move it. This will be fixed in an update by allowing the arrow keys to navigate the menu as well.

5. Nope. If it's any consolation, they can't see your HP either. ;)

6. Orbs give you magical effects. Two eyes are better than one.

7. Hmm, I think this may be fixed as well in the update, there are some screen layout improvements.

8. Only floor traps can be disarmed. There are also alternative ways to trigger traps.

9. Right, shields are the only armour items in Fargoal 1.x. If you've played the original C64 game, it's closely based on the original style. Fargoal 2 has a ton of weapons, armour, items etc. however.

10. It's hard for me to say without knowing the full circumstances of the battle, i.e. whether you attacked or they attacked, if your back is to a wall, etc.

Thanks for your help, madgarden. That helps a lot.

As for number 10, I was perusing the wiki article on the original SoF and found this:

"A warrior can flee an attack at anytime, unless they fall victim to a sneak attack (which is when a monster engages in combat before the warrior has a chance to move). The only escape from a sneak attack is by using a Teleport spell."

I think that explains what I was seeing.
